ODIRS seals off 33 Companies in Akure for Tax defaulting

In line with the judgment of a court, not less than 33 companies were sealed off by the Ondo State Internal Revenue Service (ODIRS) across the state due to default payment of tax.

The enforcement followed by the judgment of the Chief Magistrate Grade 1, Hon. Justice O. A Edwin on the 9th of February, 2022.

Some of the sealed companies in Akure are;  Damorotex filling station, Oda road; Fabolag filling station, Oda road; Business complex, Oda road; Joburet Gas limited; Reuben Fasoranti road; Crystal suites, Ijapo; First Victoria Castle hotel, ijapo and Kako security system limited, Oke ijebu.

The business places sealed includes; hotels, filling stations, gas plants, among others.

Speaking during the exercise,
Barrister Gregory Oyetan Afuwape, the Assistant Director and State counsel to Ondo State Internal Revenue service (ODIRS) noted that some tax payers defaulted in payment of their taxes, land use charge, personal income tax.

He said “They have been taken to court and prosecuted diligently to the extent that the court granted us the judgment and after the judgment, the court gave the defaulters 30 days to go and pay their liabilities, within the period, they didn’t turn up and at the end of the day, we decided to carry out the enforcement of the court”.

Afuwape added that “the defaulters’ debts amounts to over 23,000,000 ( twenty three million naira). Some liabilities covered 2017 till date, some 2019 or 2020.

“If anyone of the defaulters makes an attempt to unlock their business places without the court’s order, that will be a contempt of the court which is a criminal offence and they will be dealt with accordingly,” Afuwape said.
